Our Values

We aim to embrace the following values in all we do.

01

Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui. Be bold, be brave, be steadfast. We strive to be impactful, to make a difference, empower innovation and push the boundaries, challenging the norm for the greater good. We are committed to operationalising our Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitment to ensure hauora for tangata whenua. We believe and embrace a just & fair society for all people in Aotearoa, especially communities most impacted by inequity such as our Pasifika peoples’. We acknowledge institutional racism results in inequitable health and wellbeing outcomes and requires system-wide change.

Tika, pono me te aroha. Doing what is right with integrity and fairness, love and compassion. We strive to be respectful, open, honest and transparent in our communication and active listeners. We are committed to whakamana those we engage with, in empowering relationships, empowering people, whānau and communities. We embrace this Samoan proverb: “E fofo e le alamea le alamea” (Let the issues within the communities be resolved by those in the communities) recognising solutions are within communities.

03

Hongi
Whiria te tangata. Weaving people together. We prioritise whanaungatanga (relationship building), va fealoa’i/toka’i (respectful relationships) to develop strong connections underpinned by reciprocity (tauhi vā) & humility (loto tō), respect and trust. Awhi mai, awhi atu - we value the strength of collaboration (ngāue fakataha) and partnership. In this respect, we embrace this whakatauki: “Nāku te rourou, nāu te rourou, ka ora ai te Iwi” – with your food basket (contribution) and my food basket, the people will all prosper.

“We are no ordinary grantmaker. We don’t just give out money – our point of difference is that we form long-term partnerships with people and organisations tackling challenges and work to support these communities.”

Our Whakapapa

MAS Foundation adopted a proactive values-based approach to grantmaking in 2021 following the appointment of Heads of Foundation in a Te Tiriti partnership role. This leadership model has further strengthened our journey of implementing our Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitment.
